Will Canada annex Cuba?

Posted by Joseph on March 30, 2007

High ranking sources in Havana and Ottawa have confirmed that Cuba will become the 11th province of Canada after Fidel Castro dies. The United Nations, the European Union and Buckingham Palace, still rankling from the Helms-Burton Act, have given their blessing to the deal. The secret meeting, took place in 1997 during Chretien’s era. Insiders in the Canadian Prime Minister’s office revealed that Fidel Castro and Jean Chretien met secretly in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to sign the deal.

A person close to the prime minister explains Canada’s reasons: “From the Canadian point of view it makes perfect sense. We’ve always had close ties and good relations with Cuba through development, aid and Canadians love to go there for their holidays. As a new province of Canada, Cubans will enjoy the same rights as any of our citizens - government health insurance, Federal Aid for development and a say in their own government.”

It will be win-win situation impacting both countries. Canadian tourists and snowbirds, instead of spending billions in Arizona, Florida or Hawaii will be spending it in a Canadian hot-spot. Keeping their dollars in Canada and helping both economies. The island will develop into one of our richest provinces. It will become our Hawaii.”

After searching high and low, world’s tallest man marries

Posted by Joseph on March 28, 2007

After searching high and low, the world’s tallest man has married a woman two-thirds his height, a Chinese newspaper reported Wednesday. Bao Xishun, a seven-foot, nine-inch herdsman from Inner Mongolia, married saleswoman Xia Shujian, who was five feet, six inches tall, several days ago, the Beijing New reported. Bao’s 28-year-old bride is half his age and hailed from his hometown of Chifeng even though marriage advertisements were sent around the world, it said. “After a long and careful selection, the effort has been finally paid off,” the newspaper said. Bao was confirmed last year by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s tallest person.

Quebec saved from Referendum

Posted by Joseph on March 27, 2007

Quebecers have elected a minority Liberal government yesterday – the first minority in the province in 130 years. The PQ that was expected to form the minority government, failed even to form the official opposition, ending up in third place. The seat distribution is as follows: Liberals: 48 seats (loss of 26 seats), Action Démocratique du Québec: 41 seats (increase of 36 seats) and the Parti Québécois with 36 seats (loss of 9 seats). The voter turnout was 71%. The ballots cast, showed two things: 1) Voters are upset with Liberal mismanagement over the last four years; and 2) The Voters were angered by the PQ’s proposal of a referendum.

Mouse makes off with man’s dentures

Posted by Joseph on March 26, 2007

Never underestimate a mouse’s determination. There’s a mouse in Bill Exner’s house that he says he has captured three times. Each time, the mouse escaped, and the last time the rodent made off with his lower dentures. Exner, 68, said he and his wife Shirley scoured his bedroom after the dentures disappeared from his night stand. “We moved the bed, moved the dressers and the night stand and tore the closet apart,” he said. “I said, ‘I knew that little stinker stole my teeth’ - I just knew it.” They found a small opening in a wall where they suspected the mouse was coming and going, and their daughter’s fiance, Eric Holt, stepped in to help. “He brought a crowbar and hammer and he sawed off a section of wood and pulled up the molding and everything,” Exner said. “It was quite a job.” They retrieved the dentures, and Holt suggested his future father-in-law boil them in peroxide and whatever else he could find for to disinfect it. The mouse apparently isn’t done. It frequently comes out and stares at Exner, his wife said.

Only in America…

Posted by Joseph on March 23, 2007

A rare 1823 copy of the Declaration of Independence sold at auction for $477,650 by a man who found it last year in a Nashville thrift store for $2.48. Michael Sparks, a music equipment technician, sold the document Thursday at Raynors’ Historical Collectible Auctions in Burlington, N.C. Six bidders contended for the document, most by phone or Internet, when bidding opened at $125,000. The identity of the winner was not disclosed. Sparks found his bargain last March while browsing at Music City Thrift Shop. When he asked the price on a yellowed, shellacked, rolled-up document, the clerk marked it at $2.48 plus tax. The document turned out to be an “official copy” of the Declaration of Independence - one of 200 commissioned by John Quincy Adams in 1820 when he was secretary of state and printed by William Stone in 1823. Sparks said he had a few plans for the money: a used car, adding a sun room to his house, helping to support his parents and giving some to charity. “You think it is a huge fortune, but by the time you figure it up and put some off for the taxes it is not. It is not a huge fortune, but more like a small fortune,” he said.

Canadian Seaports Vunerable to Terrorist Attacks: Senate Report

Posted by Joseph on March 23, 2007

A Senate panel says Canada’s ports need tougher sea-container screening, hundreds more police and a high-tech security pass system to prevent terrorists from sneaking a deadly weapon into the country. The Senate security and defence committee said Thursday there are too many holes in the tattered port safety net to effectively scrutinize the four million containers that arrive annually by sea, almost one-third of them en route to the United States. “Any one of these containers could contain chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive devices designed to lay waste to a large Canadian or U.S. target,” says the 108-page report, evoking a 9-11-style attack. “Is this probable? Perhaps not. But was it probable in 2001 that a bunch of terrorists would commandeer planes and fly them into buildings?”

The Prime Minsiter: Standing Up for the Canadian Military

Posted by Joseph on March 22, 2007

“I can understand the passion that the leader of the Opposition and members of his party feel for the Taliban prisoners,” Harper said. “I just wish occasionally they would show the same passion for Canadian soldiers. I would like to see more support in the House of Commons from all sides for Canadian men and women in uniform,” he said. “I think Canadians expect that from parliamentarians in every party. They have not been getting it, and they deserve it!”

Liberals oust Ontario MP for supporting budget

Posted by Joseph on March 21, 2007

Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has expelled former cabinet minister Joe Comuzzi from the party’s caucus because he plans to support the Conservative government’s budget. “He’s not anymore part of the caucus,” Dion said Wednesday after a caucus meeting. He said he had spoken with the Thunder Bay, Ont., MP who confirmed he would vote for the budget. Joe Comuzzi, right, talks with Paul Martin in 2004. Comuzzi later resigned from Martin’s cabinet over the Liberals’ same-sex marriage bill. “A vote on the budget, like a vote on a throne speech, is a vote of confidence. You cannot vote against the caucus on it.” “He’s well aware, after 19 years in the House, of the consequences of what he’s doing,” Dion said.

Comuzzi had told a local newspaper that he’s supporting the budget because it contains funding for a molecular cancer research centre that employs 300 people in his riding. Comuzzi, 73, will now sit as an Independent, leaving the Liberals with 100 MPs, the Conservatives with 125, the Bloc Québécois with 50 and the New Democrats with 29. There is one other Independent MP and two seats are vacant. The Liberals and NDP have indicated they will vote against the budget, released Monday.

However, the budget will likely pass — thus avoiding the triggering of an election — because the Bloc has indicated it will back Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s fiscal plan. Comuzzi is not planning to run in the next election. The start of question period in the House of Commons was momentarily delayed Wednesday as Conservative MPs chanted: “We want Joe, we want Joe.” This decision to support the budget was not the first time Comuzzi has taken an open stand against his party. Two years ago, under the government of then prime minister Paul Martin, he resigned from cabinet over the Liberals’ same-sex marriage bill.
